Trojans II, August 13 '11 (away)
Back on the road again and looking to snap their current losing streak, the 1sts headed off to the immaculate surroundings
of Trojans on Saturday, and welcomed back Cap'n Richie from his mid-season break sunning himself in the Med. In fact, there was good news all
round, as it seemed the team would even be playing with a full 11 this week, something that hasn't always been possible this season.
On a ground seemingly made for scoring runs, 'Parish batted first and life looked easy enough for Paddy and Tim until the latter aimed across a
ball towards mid-wicket and was bowled. After a relatively trouble free opening partnership of 28, this came as something of a surprise, and
triggered a mini collapse as Rob, Paddy for a composed 22 and JD, for once failing to cash in on his good recent form, all headed back to the
pavilion. For the second time in as many weeks, Charlie chose to counter-attack, and blazed his way to 40 as he put on 58 with Richie in just 7
overs. But having played some sumptuous shots, Charlie also paid the price for aiming across the line and was bowled by the leggie, just as he
was looking like he might put the game beyond the home side almost single handed. That maiden century will have to wait another week.
Josh and AJ recorded a pair of ducks from consecutive balls, meaning that Turkleton came out at number 9 with the score on 116-7 to face the
hat-trick ball. With that successfully negotiated, he set about trying to repair the damage with Richie, who was playing with calm assurance at
the other end as the chaos went on around him. At first watchfully, and then with increasing confidence, this pair saw 'Parish past the 150 and on
towards the 175, Richie looking to angle the ball through the gully and hit through cover while Turkleton drove cleanly down the ground, and the
partnership had reached 56 when Richie, looking for a quick single at the start of the final over, pulled his calf and had to retire hurt for a
valiant 48. Charles had the thankless task of facing the final 2 balls of the innings needing at least 2 to secure the 6th batting point, and he
managed to get the last ball through to the mid-wicket boundary to ensure the landmark was achieved as 'Parish closed on 177-7. Turkleton ended
unbeaten on 30, his second succesive notable contribution from down the order.
Turkleton and Charles started the 'Parish bowling effort accurately enough, and Charles had early success when he encouraged one of the openers
to play on, cutting at one too close to his body. That brought the aggressive Maunsell to the crease, and he looked to get after Charles in particular,
hitting him for a number of boundaries through the off side. A Turkleton slower ball finally accounted for him as he closed on his 50, Charles
enjoying a degree of retribution as he held on to the catch at long on. It could have been 2 wickets in 2 balls as an inside edge was dropped down
the leg side by recently married 'keeper Lee, now back from rioting in London, and the very next delivery brought Turkleton further success as
Tim fell like a great redwood to his right at 1st slip to claim a stunning one handed catch inches from the turf as Glyn seamed one away to find
the outside edge of the other opener's bat. With the score now on 69-3 after 20 overs, the match was in the balance, but the post-drinks session
saw Trojans' 4th wicket pair dominate, Peacock (42) and Khan (48 not out) combining to swing the game decisively in the favour of the home side.
JD got a late consolation as Peacock drove straight to Charles at cover, but the game was wrapped up soon after, despite an accurate and economical
spell from Paddy (6-2-11-0).
So another defeat as the 1sts' season seems to have hit freefall, despite a competitive showing against a team challenging for the promotion spots.
Something a little better is hoped for next week as Nomansland are welcomed to the Whiteparish Oval, local bragging rights up for grabs in addition
to the visitors still looking for their first win of the season.
Summary
Whiteparish 177-7 (Richie 48rt, Charlie 40, Turkleton 30no, Paddy 22)
Trojans 181-4 (Turkleton 2-27)
