Sway, July 23 '11 (away)

Another road trip after a home washout the previous week, and it was off to the home of the unbeaten league leaders, Sway. Good one to win boys...

With Charles still hamstrung and playing as a specialist fielder, it was left to Turkleton and Charlie to open the attack, and despite one or two near misses, the home side's openers moved smoothly past 50 before Glyn won an LBW decision to get the wickets column moving. Paddy replaced the wayward Charlie and he quickly settled into a rhythm, bowling good lines and lengths and getting a little swing. He was rewarded for his efforts when he saw the stumps of the other opener re-arranged, and 'Parish established a pattern of chipping away with important wickets every time Sway looked to build a sizeable total.

As usual, JD seemed to present all kinds of problems with his lucky dip variety mix, and benefitted from a smart catch by Inzy Drew at mid-wicket to prevent a full toss from being dispatched to the boundary. Rather less luck involved in the dismissal of perennial run scorer Attapatu, who gave JD the charge having been frustrated by his inability to get him away by conventional means and nicking to Richie behind the stumps. JD's impressive figures of 4-34 could have been even better but for a couple of dropped catches, and his contribution did much to keep the Sway total to a reachable 178-7.

The end of the innings brought a rather unsavoury scene as Trucks took umbridge at a harmless gesture from one of the not out Sway batsmen, resulting in a bit of handbags and name calling. All rather unnecessary and left the combatants needing to be separated before we could all head off for the shelter of the pavilion for some much needed tea.

The reply began smoothly enough, Paddy putting some recent low scores behind him to rediscover some of his touch and Tim reaching double figures for the first time this season. The tranquility was cruelly broken when Tim was out, and Richie's grinding didn't have its usual effect as he was stumped for 9. Paddy's accomplished knock came to an end on 29, and he was the first of several 'Parish players to get a start but not capitalise, a situation that ultimately cost the game. JD took up residence at one end, playing calmly to keep the board ticking over while his companions took more risks at the other, Trucks and Josh looking to get after the bowling and keep the required run rate under control. Trucks launched one massive six, but was caught on the rope trying to repeat the dose, and while Josh and JD combined in a profitable partnership, Josh's dismissal for 18, putting his back out in the process as he was caught at point, meant that there was still work to be done.

Charlie struck one fabulous cover drive before also heading back to the pavilion, so it was left to JD and Lord Harris to try and see 'Parish home. Unfortunately, they had a little too much to do as the opening bowlers returned to stiffle the flow of runs, and a notional 16 off the final over proved well beyond them, despite JD ending on 51 not out.

So the unbeaten league leaders given a run for their money, but ultimately it was Sway who were able to apply pressure at the right time with both bat and ball, which probably speaks volumes as to why they sit on top of the league.

Summary

Sway 178-7 (JD 4-34)

Whiteparish 165-6 (JD 51no, Paddy 29)
