Hyde, May 28 '11 (home)
After the disappointment of defeat to Sarisbury, it was back to winning ways for the 1sts on Saturday as they completed an
ultimately comfortable 5 wicket win over Hyde. Not wanting to lose face in the battle for club bragging rights with the 2nds going through
May unbeaten, this turned out to be a crucial victory!
Bowling first on a blustery, overcast afternoon, it took 'Parish 20 minutes to remember they were supposed to be playing cricket, and by the
time they'd woken up, the visitors had already piled up 41-0 from the first 6 overs. At this stage, it looked like it might be a long afternoon,
but Charlie was embarking on an inspired spell from the Football Ground end having replaced Trucks, who had seen a chance put down at slip and
consequently went for 14 from his next over before being put out to graze in the outfield. Charlie extracted some life and movement, jagging
the ball around and disconcerting all of the visiting batsmen and routing the top order as he returned a commendable 5-36 from his 10 over spell.
With Charles coming back from an indifferent start to pick up a wicket and find his usual economical line and length, the runs soon dried up
and Hyde needed to dig in to post a respectable total.
However, a moment of unlikley fielding magic contributed to the continued downward spiral of their innings, Inzy Drew sticking out a hand as he
sauntered back from mid-wicket and the ball nestling gently in his outstretched palm; never has a fielder been so surprised to take a catch. With
JD picking up an LBW verdict with a much slower slower ball, it was left to Turkleton to polish off the tail as he bowled numbers 10 and 11 to
finish with 3-21, Hyde all out for 125.
Paddy and Richie opened up the reply and looked to be cruising to a comfortable win. Well, Paddy did anyway as he stroked and glided his way to
40 of the first 50 runs, extras contributing the other 10 and Richie not managing to get off the mark until the 17th over. Grinding of the highest
order. Still, the total was ticking over and a stand of 70 was posted for the first wicket. With Paddy going for a confident 45, and Richie finally
being put out of his misery for 15, JD and Trucks took the positive route and looked to finish the game in double quick time, Trucks in particular
playing aggressively as he got off the mark with a 6 and hit another maximum on his way to 18. Just as he looked set to break his poor home
record, he was back in the pavilion, rueing both his dismissal and the breaking of yet another bat in the process.
JD lived a slightly charmed life before also being dismissed in the teens, and the quest for maximum points meant that 'Parish couldn't afford to
lose another wicket on their way to the 126 they needed for victory. Charlie continued his good day with some fluent shots and was on 16 with the
scores level, a dozen overs left in which to score the winning run and under no pressure whatsoever. So of course he was bowled, leaving Josh and
Jonny Donut to finish the job and complete the win.
So 3 out of 4 in May for the 1sts, and a promising start to the season. Onwards and upwards to Bishops Waltham next weekend.
Summary
Hyde 125 all out (Charlie 5-36, Turkleton 3-21)
Whiteparish 129-5 (Paddy 45)
