Havant III, May 7 '11 (home)

Our first league game since being moved from Regional 1 North into the equivalent South division, and our first win. Nice way to start!

With thunder storms overnight giving some much needed rain, Richie won an important toss and opted to make use of the new ball, entrusting Charlie and Charles with the responsibility of leading the attack now that Dangerous Dave is back home in Australia. They both found a good May length early on, pitching the ball up and inviting the drive when conditions dictated that the batsmen needed to be a little more circumspect as it wasn't quite coming on. This didn't deter the Havant top order from trying, and resulted in a series of early catches in the covers and at mid-off, Josh, Turkleton and debutant Robbie "Penelope" Keith being the grateful beneficiaries.

These excellent opening spells, Charlie returning 10-4-25-3 and Charles 8-2-19-1, were backed up by JD and Turkleton who kept taking wickets while still restricting the scoring rate. JD returned 4-24 and Glyn (2-19) bowled the only two Havant players to reach double figures as the visitors were dismissed for 94, representing an encouraging display in the field from the home side.

The problem with low scores is that you never really know how good or bad they are until the reply has taken place, but for all the talk of uneven bounce in the visiting ranks, Inzy Drew and Paddy made life look relatively straight forward early on, both exhibiting some of their trademark shots, with Inzy driving down the ground and Paddy playing strokes so cultured they could have been reciting Shakespeare on their way to the boundary. Unfortunately the poetry didn't last, and the openers were swiftly followed back to the pavilion by Trucks, who continued his wretched run of home form while seemingly scoring at will when playing away.

Nerves were just beginning to jangle among the watching hordes of Whiteparish supporters, but Cap'n Grinder and JD settled the contest in quick order as the clouds closed in, JD (27no) hitting over the top to good effect while Richie played some of his favoured cover drives to end on 30 not out and seal a comfortable win by 7 wickets.

An encouraging display from 'Parish, with more to come as the potentially destructive middle order of Josh, Robbie and Charles wasn't required, and a marker laid down at the start of the season that the side will hopefully aspire to exceed in the coming weeks.

Summary

Havant III 94 all out (JD 4-24, Charlie 3-25, Turkleton 2-19, Charles 1-19)

Whiteparish 95-3 (Richie 30no, JD 27no, Paddy 19)
