Compton, August 6 '11 (home)

Following narrow defeats against Sway and Southampton Community, 'Parish looked to get back to winning ways with a first home game for more than a month, Compton having made the long journey west to provide the opposition. The home side were at a disadvantage though, as the non-appearance of Trucklo meant they were playing with only 10 men.

It looked like the journey had distracted the visitors as the very first ball of the match, a full toss from Charles, was clipped tamely to Turkleton at mid-on who made no mistake with the catch. A dream start for the home side, and Charles was to strike again, removing the number 3 as JD took a rather more difficult chance diving to his left at cover. When Turkleton bowled the number 4 in his first over, taking over from Jack after a decent opening burst from the Football Ground End, the Compton innings was wobbling, but the 4th wicket partnership improved matters for the visitors and made sure that they would set a challenging total. While the remaining opener played resolutely, the left handed G.Turner was somewhat more adventurous, launching the ball down the ground with some clean striking and generally playing some very attractive shots on his way to a fine 63. Turkleton claimed his second wicket with the final ball of his 10 over spell, ending the vigil of the opening batsman who had played a valuable anchor role for his side.

With 4 wickets down, Charlie and Paddy proceeded to work their way swiftly through the lower order, Charlie having Turner strangled down the leg side where stand in 'keeper Mr Darryl took a good catch. After that, resistance was minimal, Charles ending up with 3-25 and Paddy 2-14 as they stuck to the virtues of bowling full and straight on a pitch with just a hint of variable bounce. A good comeback from 'Parish, who would be chasing 188 for the win.

Tim, Lord Harris and Paddy didn't last long and the potential victory target looked a long way off as Charlie went out to join JD. But with this pair playing the only way they know how, boundaries started coming thick and fast, the scoring rate accelerated dramatically and the runs required started ticking down. The introduction of the Compton slow bowlers then swung the game decisively as Charlie, after a rapid 30, was the first of 4 quick wickets to fall to the loopy stuff. Darryl, the guesting AJ and Jack all failed to trouble the scorers and with the total not yet at 100, 7 wickets were already in the bag for Compton. Fortunately for 'Parish, JD was proving to be slightly more difficult to shift at the other end, and he found a resolute ally in Turkleton. Between them, this pair added a half century partnership, JD scoring freely with his usual aerial approach and Turkleton occasionally opening up with his favoured drives down the ground. The run rate wasn't an issue, with 40 needed from 10 overs when a heavy shower briefly forced the players from the pitch, so the result was always going to be about wickets, with 'Parish being a player short and Compton only needing 9 dismissals as a consequence.

The rain delay initially seemed to have worked in 'Parish's favour, the now greasy wicket making it difficult for the bowlers to stand up in their delivery strides as Compton turned back to their seamers on the resumption. JD clattered one drive over cover to bring up the 150, but when he was caught and bowled at the end of the same over for a fine 77, the writing was on the wall. In fact the end would follow swiftly in the very next over as Charles aimed something ambitious down the ground and was bowled, the 'Parish chase ending well short on 152 all out.

A competitive match played in good spirit by both sides, and potentially one decided by the missing 'Parish player; save a few more in the field, score a few more with the bat, and this would have been a very tight game.

Summary

Compton 187-9 (Charlie 3-25, Paddy 2-14, Charles 2-30, Turkleton 2-46)

Whiteparish 152 all out (JD 77, Charlie 30, Turkleton 21no)
