CBBEA, July 02 '11 (away)

A jaunt down to the coast to take on another new team at another new ground, this time CBBEA at Bournemouth. Whiteparish lined up with a mixture of the old and the new for this game, Jack Orr making his 1st team debut having stepped up from the 2nds, Gareth Bowen taking his bow for the club and Jimmy Hamblin making his first appearance of the season.

CBBEA made a steady start, putting on 50 for the first wicket, but thereafter life was more of a struggle and they lost 9 wickets in scoring the next 116 runs to post 166-9. Turkleton claimed the first wicket, bowling the oppo skipper with what could generously be termed a yorker, but which was closer to being a low full toss. From then on, the day became the JD show as his variety bag confounded a succession of the home batsmen resulting in a hat-trick of LBW decisions going in his favour. Finishing with 3-47 from his 10 overs, JD's day wasn't done yet, but more about that later.

At the other end, Jack Orr came on for his first bowl for the 1sts to replace the economical Turkleton, and he looked immediately at home bowling his left arm seam and swing with good control and no little skill. He claimed his maiden wicket by knocking back the middle stump of the dangerous looking number 4 and was generally impressive in his 6 over stint.

Paddy took up the attack after JD and was both economical and penetrative, finishing with the excellent figures of 5-1-8-2 as he closed the innings from one end. Jack further impressed with a catch at long off to give Charlie a late wicket, sticking up a hand as the ball looked to be going for a maximum and pulling the ball down with surprised delight. There was just time for Jimmy to bowl his first over of the season before the innings closed and the teams adjourned to the pavilion for an excellent tea.

The start of the run chase was no less than disastrous as Paddy and Richie struggled early and were dismissed in single figures. Gareth cut to gully, Charlie drove to cover and the Lord Harris went early as well. Looking to be pretty much out of the game, the two Jims now combined to put together an untroubled partnership which gave 'Parish a fighting chance, JD taking the more aggressive role and Jimmy H playing calmly but positively as the total ticked down. Jimmy's dismissal for 20, quickly followed Turkleton, suggested that any genuine chance for the win was gone, but JD, along with Jack had other ideas as the pair traded boundries and induced some concern in the home ranks.

Jack was bowled for a promising 13 and Sir Geoffrey followed shortly afterwards, leaving a last wicket stand to come from JD, who was now well past his 50 and cruising, and Charles, a hamstring victim who was only playing due to a player shortage and hadn't been able to bowl. JD was hit on the thumb attempting a guide to 3rd man, and that hampered his hitting ability as he struggled to keep his bottom hand on the bat. Charles took up the responsibilty of chasing down the runs, creaming a boundary through midwicket before hitting a low, flat straight 6 to put the game back in the balance.

This final valiant pair took the pursuit closer and closer until just 2 were required for the win with the best part of 5 overs still to be bowled and JD, with 80 to his name, on strike. Receiving a half volley, JD went on the drive and middled it, but hit it stright at extra cover - who held the catch. A yard either side or a yard higher and the great escape would have been complete, instead of which 'Parish fell just 1 run short, despite the heroics of Charlie and especially JD.

Hard luck lads, but a spirited pursuit from a seemingly impossible position, and a very encouraging display from Jack giving a glimpse of what might be in years to come.

Summary

CBBEA 166-9 (JD 3-47, Paddy 2-8, Charlie 2-53)

Whiteparish 165 all out (JD 80, Jimmy 20, Charles 14no, Jack 13)
