Burley, June 25 '11 (home)
After the euphoria of a splendid win on the Island against Ryde, it was back down to earth with a bump on Saturday for the 1st XI
as they were handed a right royal stuffing by Burley.
With the wicket damp following a wet week and more rain overnight, making first use of the new ball and letting the track dry out in the sun
seemed the obvious plan, and one that 'Parish duly followed. Charlie struck early, JD taking the catch at point, but that was to be Parish's
sole breakthrough until Richie introduced Turkleton to follow Charlie down the hill from the Football Ground End. He enjoyed immediate success, claiming
a caught and bowled to dismiss the number 3, and going on to bowl the other opener a few overs later. JD took over from Charles from the Church
End, and the Burley middle order looked to get after him, with mixed success. Some lusty blows found their intended boundary target, but others only
succeeded in picking out the waiting fielders. Unfortunately for JD, those fielders weren't in the mood to oblige by holding the opportunities
presented, a total of 6 catches going down across the course of the innings which cost 'Parish dear in terms of bowling points, and allowed Burley
to post a total somewhat higher than it should have been.
Eventually a couple of chances stuck, Josh taking his 8th catch of the season diving forwards at cover to give Glyn his 3rd wicket, and Charles
pouching a skyer at long-off to give JD some due reward. With JD also taking a routine caught and bowled, the Burley innings wobbled, but those
were to be Parish's final successes until Turkleton took his 4th wicket with the final ball of the innings, Mr Darryl keeping his composure to
claim a fine catch. 148-7 represented a competitive total in the conditions, and Parish were left to rue missed chances which could have wrapped
up the innings much sooner.
The reply began sedately, Paddy and Inzy negotiating the first few overs without any sign of the carnage to come. But once Paddy drove off the back
foot to be well held at cover, all hell broke loose as P.Yates delivered an inspired spell of left arm swing to take 6-17, his movement back into
the right handers proving far too much for the Parish line up to handle as batsman after batsman came and went in rapid succession. Only JD with a
defiant 34 provided any resistance, but when he was caught on the cover boundary, the game was up and the home side subsided to a miserable 57 all
out. Pretty poor effort, that.
A slip down the table from 3rd to 6th, and back to the drawing board as availability issues start to raise their ugly head. Still, a jaunt down to
the seaside next weekend with a trip to Bournemouth to take on CCBEA, so look on the bright side!
Summary
Burley 148-7 (Turkleton 4-20, JD 2-43)
Whiteparish 57 all out (JD 34)
