Bishops Waltham II, June 4 '11 (away)
With identical records prior to this game, both sides having won 3 out of 4, 'Parish travelled to Bishops Waltham
expecting a tough test of their credentials. Warm sunshine, a large, flat outfield and good looking track all suggested a day for the
batsmen to enjoy and the bowlers to dread, and so it proved as an entertaining match served up nearly 400 runs and only 9 wickets. With
3 of those being run outs, there were slim pickings for the bowlers on both sides.
The home side batted first and suffered an early casualty when JD and Richie, keeping wicket in the absence of regular stumper Lee,
combined to run out one of Waltham's openers for a duck. This was to be 'Parish's sole success for a prolonged period as the batsmen
started to play some classy shots through the off side and capitalised on the fast outfield. They moved to 82-1 after the first 20 overs
before Turkleton made the breakthrough, bowling the remaining opener as he aimed across the line. Further run out opportunities came and
went as fielders couldn't make chances count, and 16-year-old H.McGee in particular profitted as he moved to a fluent 64 before becoming
the victim of a great stop by Josh and a ridiculous call for a second run.
Turkleton hit the stumps again to double his wicket tally in his final over, finishing with 2-42, and JD picked up another scalp as the middle
order looked to accelerate towards the end of the innings. Unfortunately, there was a little too much acceleration from one of their batsmen,
who managed to pull a muscle as he completed a quick 2 and was forced to retire hurt. He wasn't the only player hobbling about as the innings
drew to a close, Josh also struggling after he aggrevated his long-standing knee complaint, and Lord Harris, returning for his 3rd career as a
Whiteparish player having come out of self-imposed retirement, looking as agile as ever.
193 looked to be a respectable, rather than imposing total, but 'Parish didn't make the best of starts to their run chase as Paddy and JD both
fell to good one handed catches by the Waltham 'keeper to leave the innings tottering at 25-2. Josh added some impetous with a cleanly struck 35,
while Richie was busy entrenching himself at the other end. Josh's dismissal put the game back in the balance at 75-3, but only served to herald
the arrival of Charlie at the crease who was about to play the innings of the day. He immediately looked at ease, driving powerfully through cover
and working the ball repeatedly through the vacant mid-wicket area. While Richie dabbed through gully and drove anything in his favourite slot
outside off stump, the pair quickly moved the score along and always looked to put the fielders under pressure as they contended with the wide
open spaces of the large outfield.
Perhaps it was the sight of Lord Harris padded up and ready to come in at number 6, perhaps it was the cackling of Mr Goose on the boundary
edge, who actually interrupted play as his seasonal mating call disturbed the run up of the opening bowler, but Charlie and Richie were in no
mood to let the home side back into the game and eased 'Parish towards the victory with a succession of cleanly struck boundaries. Charlie
was able to celebrate his maiden half century for the 1st XI as he cruised to 76 not out (12 fours) while Richie made sure he passed his own
personal landmark, reaching 50 as the winning post loomed into view. The partnership ended as an unbroken 121, the win eventually being secured
with nearly 5 overs to spare, which illustrated just how well these two played.
A very satisfactory win for the 'Parish, who have now both defended and chased significant totals in the season to date, and should take confidence
in this batting display as they look to next weekend and a meeting with IBM Hursley at the Sherfield Oval, our home from home for the day
while the ground at Whiteparish plays host to the annual carnival and fete.
