Petersfield, May 22 '10 (home)

A first game at the Whiteparish Oval this season for the 1st XI, and a second league win, meaning the side has now won as many games in Regional 1 North in 3 weeks as it did in the entire 2008 season!

With a hard track on offer and the sun shining down from on high, it was no great surprise that Petersfield opted to bat first on winning the toss. On the other hand, this also presented an opportunity to see what Dangerous Dave would do with a shiny new ball and a pitch with a bit of bounce and carry, so possibly not a bad toss to have lost.

And Dave was indeed dangerous, despite struggling with a touch of Man Flu, as he tested all of the visiting batsmen with a combination of pace, bounce and swing. Using the short ball sparingly but effectively, and attacking the stumps in between times, he cleaned up one of the openers and could have had the other but Turkleton put down a low chance at slip. With Charlie keeping things tight from the Church End, bowling 5 maidens in his 10 over allocation, scoring runs was proving a tricky business. An early drinks break once again provided a wicket, as is so often the case, Charlie bowling the number 3 in the first over back. Dave then produced the pivotal moment of the innings as he neared the end of his spell. Asking to be bowled through so as not to stiffen up in the outfield, his 9th over produced 2 wickets, as he first nipped one back to bowl the number 4, and then had the opener snaffled at slip, Turkleton holding on to atone for his earlier miss. A 4th wicket was added in his final over, again bowled, and he finished with 4-35, the Petersfield top order all back in the pavilion before any bowling changes had been made.

Looking to rebuild the innings and set some kind of total, the visitors were in circumspect mood against Turkleton and JD who kept their lines and lengths tight, offering very little to hit. Glyn claimed 2 LBW victims while only conceding 13 runs from 9 economical overs, and JD cleaned up the remaining batting threat who had looked to be positive but perished swinging across the line. Dave proved that he was mortal by dropping a relatively straight forward chance in the deep, but it didn't prove to be too costly and it was left to Paddy, enjoying his first bowl for the 1sts, to mop up the final 2 wickets, bowling full and straight in the closing overs - textbook stuff, and Petersfield ended on 127 all out, enabling 'Parish to keep their record intact of claiming maximum bowling points in every game so far this season. The only blemish was conceding 26 extras, the top score and a potential problem in a low scoring game.

The run chase got off to a fairly disastrous start when Turkleton, filling in as a makeshift opener in Jimmy's absence, miscued to cover in the second over. Worse was to come when Paddy went LBW in the following over, the scoreboard reading 0-2! AJ and JD combined in a belligerent stand of 60 to steady the listing ship, JD in particular deciding that attack was the best means of defense, including a hooked 6 off the opening bowler. Looking set for a second consecutive 50, he was undone by one that kept low to be bowled for 44, and his dismissal triggered a second minor crisis. AJ, after a well made 22, Josh and Charlie were all soon back in the pavilion, leaving the innings looking over the precipice at 79-6 and the visitors sensing victory.

Cool heads were called for, and there aren't many cooler than Richie, who immediately looked in control, playing stright and waiting for the over- pitched delivery to dismiss through cover. With one end now secure, it was Dave who provided the flourish at the other, underlining his man of the match credentials as he dismissed anything on his legs through midwicket. What had looked like a tricky situation soon became a dominant one, this pair taking the wind out of the Petersfield comeback and securing the victory with more than a dozen overs to spare, Dave racing to an unbeaten 30 to seal the deal.

A hard-fought win, with some decent bowling on both sides making the anticipated run fest a non-event. Recording 7 bowleds, 2 LBWs and one caught at slip suggests that the 'Parish attack located their collective radar, and with Jimmy and Charles to come back, the bowling at least has some strength in depth for the first time for a while.

Summary

Petersfield 127 all out (Dave 4-35, Turkleton 2-13, Paddy 2-5, Mr Extras 26)

Whiteparish 129-6 (JD 44, Dave 30 not out, AJ 22, Richie 14 not out)
