Bentworth, July 3 '10 (home)
There was always a chance that it would happen at some stage this season, and that day duly arrived on Saturday as Dangerous Dave and Charles
ran through the Bentworth batting line up to set up a comprehensive victory that meant tea was taken at 4.15 with the game over.
The Dynamic Duo, minus capes and utility belts, were given the opportunity when Richie won the toss and chose to make use of the new ball. And make
use of it they did, with Dave working up a good head of steam from the Football Ground End and finding his customary swing away from the
right handers. This was complemented by Charles's accuracy up the hill from the Church End, his wider delivery position bringing his natural angle into the
right hander. It was Dave who struck first, inducing the edge and Jimmy H taking the catch at gully at bootlace height. This initial breakthrough
began a steady stream of wickets, with none of the Bentworth batsmen looking prepared to tough it out and all looking to keep playing shots
despite the perilous position their innings was in.
Their number 4 was an honourable exception, and he seemed the only threat as he took on Dave's short ball to hit boundries square of the wicket on
both sides. But Dave got his man when another short one was top edged for Richie to complete the job at mid-wicket, and from there, the innings petered
out, Richie claiming a second catch, Lee taking a faint tickle behind the sticks, and both bowlers enjoying their day's work while JD, Turkleton,
Charlie and the other regular bowlers twiddled their unemployed thumbs in the field.
Having completed his Michelle, Dave then saw fit to prevent his opening partner from matching his achievement as he deflected a drive onto the stumps at
the bolwer's end, running out the non-striker who was backing up and ending the innings on 51 all out, Dave's 5-35 and Charles's 4-14 both being
season's best performances.
There's always a certain nervousness about chasing a low target when you know you should win reasonably easily, and matters weren't helped when
Paddy chipped a catch, the ball stopping in the pitch and Paddy being through his shot too early. Jimmy departed cheaply as well, but Dave was
enjoying his day with both bat and ball, and thumped pulls and cuts for boundries as he eased any lingering doubts in the home dressing room.
With the job nearly finished he hammered another short ball straight at cover to be dismissed for 24, but JD and Josh ensured there were no further
jitters and 'Parish cruised home in less than 12 overs, the entire game only occupying 28 of the 84 overs possible.
Summary
Bentworth 51 all out (Dave 5-35, Charles 4-14)
Whiteparish 54-3 (Dave 24)
