Ashford Hill, June 5 '10 (home)
Another win, and another low scoring nail biter for the 1st XI as they made hard work of dispatching a game Ashford Hill side.
Making his league captaincy debut, Lee got the day off to a good start by winning the toss and inviting the visitors to bat, giving
Dangerous Dave and his fellow seamers first use of the new ball. The decision paid immediate dividends as Dave dispatched the Ashford Hill
opener with the first ball of the game, bowling him with one that kept a touch low. This was to set a pattern for the rest of the match,
batsmen being wary of the occasional delivery that didn't bounce as expected.
From the Church End, Sean Pollock-a-like Charles was making his return to the side having pulled a hammy in the opening day win at St Cross,
and was immediately on the spot, hitting the seam regularly and asking questions of the visitor's batting line up. The burly number 4 looked
to counter attack when the opportunities were there, but he fell to a sucker punch from Charles when he got a top edge to an attempted clip
through mid-wicket to a full toss and only succeeded in sending the ball straight up for Paddy to take a calm catch at mid-on.
With Dave and Charles finishing their opening spells with a brace of wickets each, the middle order were circumspect against Turkleton and
JD, mindful of the need to rebuild the innings and gather as many runs as possible. A couple of aggressive shots against JD from the visiting
skipper were about as far as the rebuilding got as "Mr Cricket" Josh plucked a drive out of the air at short cover, and then it was over to Turkleton to
mop up. Lee took a neat low catch to get rid of the resolute number 5, before Glyn claimed 2 in 2 as the incoming batsman tried something ambitious
to his first ball and was bowled. Unfortunately, Lee then dropped the nick that would have given Turkleton his hat-trick, but the former skipper
had more luck in the rest of his spell as he claimed another 2 victims and wrapped up the innings with Josh taking a flamboyant diving catch
to see of the number 11.
So Ashford Hill all out for 84, and an early tea, with thoughts innevitably turning to a comfortable victory and the final of Britain's Got Talent.
Well, for some of the reality TV obsessed team anyway.
Paddy and Jimmy, almost unrecognisable batting in a helmet after his unfortunate incidient at Alresford a couple of weeks ago, looked comfortable
early doors with Paddy in particular seeming to have rediscovered his touch and timing the ball nicely through the off side. Unfortunately, this
impression of tranquility was broken by Paddy's departure and the familiar scramble for runs ensued, 'Parish proving once again that they never
do things the easy way.
Debutant Matt Truckle was undone by a cracking slower ball to record a blob in his first innings for the club and Jimmy undid his good work by
hitting a half tracker straight at point when well set. His 29, while not sounding much, was the highest score of the game by some margin. JD, Josh
and AJ all went in quick succession, and Ashford Hill were right back in it. Fortunately, the target was low enough that a couple of boundries
would ease a lot of the tension, and these were duly provided by Mr Darryl and Dave. 20-30 more runs would have made life very uncomfortable, and
Darryl's dismissal with the target in sight could still have caused a flutter or two in the home dressing room, but Dave finished the job with a
glorious straight drive, furthering his reputation as the team's new Michael Bevan-style "finisher".
Not as comfortable as would have been hoped with a target of only 84, but a 3rd win, a debut vidtory for Lee and still maximum bowling points so far
this season.
Summary
Ashford Hill 84 all out (Turkleton 4-17, Dave 2-12, JD 2-17, Charles 2-28)
Whiteparish 88-7 (Jimmy 29)
