Steeple Langford, July 25 '09 (home)

Back to winning ways for the 1sts at the weekend, although not an entriely convincing performance against Steeple Langford who put up game resistence.

As Jimmy (95) and Tubby (25) were compiling a relatively untroubled century opening partnership, it looked for all the world like a comfortable afternoon for the home side, despite having been put into bat when the Langford skipper won the toss. Tubby was the more aggressive early on while Jimmy took his time playing himself in, but the roles were soon reversed as Jim unveiled his usual array of drives and back foot shots on either side of the wicket. Tim seemed to be unnerved by the sledging of the opposition yoof who, frustrated by his inability to find the middle of the bat and their own lack of wickets, advised him to tread on his stumps to avoid further embarrassment. Rather than offering to settle the matter with a pound-for-pound eating contest at tea, Tim instead provided a couple of chances before finally falling with the platform laid for a big score provided the middle order could cash in.

However, July hasn't been a great month for run scoring in the 1sts, going back to the debacles against Penton and Godshill, so it was no great surprise when wickets started to fall regularly, a succession of batsmen getting out when looking to push the scoring rate and get up towards the 200 mark. Jimmy continued on his merry way at the other end, finally being puched at deep midwicket when he mis-timed a pull just one big shot away from his ton.

The rest of the innings was something of a non-event, worth mentioning only for the seasonal debuts of Silver Billy Bowyer and Graeme Sharp, the latter being caught off the final ball of the innings as Whiteparish closed on 176-8, having just about salvaged the 6th batting bonus point when considerably more had looked likely at the half way stage.

The Langford run chase started in the worst possible fashion as Turkleton bowled the opener with the first ball of the innings, and could have had 2 in 2 as a big shout for LBW was turned down 2nd ball. Disaster averted, the batsmen entered a period of consolidation, punctuating watchful defence with big drives when the opportunities presented themselves. Charlie didn't enjoy any luck in his opening spell, and the score was mounting steadily when the skipper claimed his second wicket, the other opener pinned in front by one that kept fractionally low.

JD and Jimmy were left with the small task of polishing off the final 8 wickets, and they set about the job with contrasting methods, Jimmy using his skiddy pace and hitting the pitch, JD opting to use the pitch as little as possible and instead electing to give the rest of the team the chance to get in some catching practice. His cunning plan worked brilliantly as a succession of catches were pouched by expectant fielders, Billy and Charlie claiming good efforts in front of the pavilion, much to the delight of the voiciferous home crowd. When Lee "better than Mark Boucher" James took his weekly dismissal, putting JD on a hat-trick, the game was as good as won, and it was just left to JD to claim his "Michelle" and for Jimmy to round off his good day in style to finish with 3-20 and wrap up a 52 run win.

Summary

Whiteparish 176-8 (Jimmy 95, Tubby 25)

Steeple Langford 124 all out (JD 5-43, Jimmy 3-20, Turkleton 2-33)
