Godshill, July 18 '09 (away)

Who said games have to be stuffed full of runs to be exciting? As 2nd met 3rd at Godshill on Saturday, the two sides proved that low scoring games can be equally gripping, even if the end result wasn't the one the 'Parish were after.

With a damp, green wicket and more rain in the air, Captain Turkleton had no hesitation in electing to bowl first on winning the toss. A day designed for seam and swing bowling, the conditions continued to favour the ball throughout the afternoon, and the skipper duly made early inroads as he took wickets in each of his first 4 overs, dismantling the Godshill top order as three men were bowled and another pouched at slip by Tubby. With Charlie chipping in with the wicket of the home side's skipper at the other end, the visitors were well on top with the score on 27-5 after 7 overs.

Then came a brief shower, 15 minutes being lost to rain, and a stubborn 6th wicket partnership which featured the two highest individual scores of the day, the Godshill numbers 6 and 7 showing what was possible with application, solid technique and a little luck. A couple of dropped catches and a missed run out chance helped their cause, before the innings was wrapped up in smart fashion as Lord Harris (3-16) and JD (2-17) finished the job, Tubby earning the fielding plaudits with a hat-trick of chances snaffled at first slip.

However, given the conditions and the the match situation after 7 overs, Godshill were the happier side having reached 92 all out, the last 5 wickets putting on a pivotal 65.

Allowing for the rain delay, Whiteparish's revised target was 87 in 37 overs. Sounds easy enough, right? But this 'Parish side like nothing more than to confound expectation, and the run chase soon went the same way as the first part of the Godshill innings, the ball still jagging around and causing problems for everyone. Wickets fell regularly to accurate bowling, and with only Richie (10) and Turkleton (12) making it to double figures, the platform for a winning score was never established. Richie was particularly unlucky, being dismissed by a stunning reaction catch at leg slip just as he was looking to push on. Not for the first time this season, Turkleton (batting at number 8) was in well before the 21 over drinks break, and dug in to try and manufacture a late order rally, but while the tumble of wickets stopped for a while, the required run rate gradually crept up. Lee provided some late belligerence, but when he was caught at midwicket top edging a pull, the game was up and Whiteparish had subsided to a paltry 62 all out.

Down to 5th in the table now with other results factored in, and 6 huge games left in the season if a promotion spot is to be secured.

Summary

Godshill 93 all out (Turkleton 4-27, Lord Harris 3-16)

Whiteparish 62 all out (Turkleton 12, Richie 10)
