Amesbury, June 13 '09 (away)

All good things must come to an end, or so the saying goes, and the 1st XI were duly brought back to earth with a bump on Saturday as they were handed a comprehensive drubbing by Amesbury to abruptly halt their unbeaten start to the season.

A fairly abject performance if the truth be told, with very few players having much to look back on with any great sense of pride. Invited to bat first, early wickets fell at regular intervals with the Amesbury opening bowlers getting plenty of swing in warm, humid conditions. AJ, Tim, JD and Pops were all back in the pavilion within the first 10 overs, and worse was to follow when the slow bowler brought on as first change did enough to defeat Charlie's forward push.

At the other end, Josh looked in no trouble at all, and repeatedly crashed shots straight at fielders, especially cover and mid-off. Slightly better placement would have resulted in considerably more runs, but he was looking well set when joined by Richie, making his seasonal debut after another major knee operation. With these two at the crease, there was some optimism that the early damage could be repaired, but after an all-too-brief partnership, Josh (23) picked out the deep mid-wicket fielder with unerring accuracy, and then Richie (16) sliced a drive straight into the hands of cover.

The skipper defended resolutely, not getting off the mark until his 30th delivery, aware of the truism that you can't score runs from the pavilion, while also apparently not being able to score runs in the middle either. At the other end, first the retired Lord Harris (18) and then Greg (10) played some pleasing shots to raise the total towards 100 and Turkleton (13 not out) finally managed to find some gaps in the field as the home side were kept waiting for their tea by some dogged wagging of the tail. Zack Green, making his debut due to the 11th hour withdrawal of Tom Mundy earlier in the day, did a great job holding up one end and nearly helped the captain to see out the overs before being caught in the 40th.

Defending a meagre 111, 'Parish needed early wickets, but they failed to materialise as the Amesbury openers sought to make short work of their less than challenging target. While one was happy to defend and nurdle, the other was in beligerent mood, going for his shots and managing to skew several balls to fine leg off the inside edge in between more authentic blows over the leg side. He reached a rapid 50 before being bowled by the persevering Turkleton, but that was to be the 'Parish's only success, despite a decent spell from JD who was unlucky not to pick up more wickets to add to his season's tally of 16.

Amesbury completed their successful run chase in just the 24th over, and the 'Parish know that they'll have to play an awful lot better than this to seriously contemplate a push for promotion as the season progresses.
