1st XI vs Winterslow, Regional 1 North (away) July 19 '08

At least this week was a bit different; despite being bowled out for under 100 for the third consecutive game, bowling first meant that the finish wasn’t quite so early, and we at least had the chance to claim a few bowling points!

Winning the toss and deciding to bat first on a very firm surface, the Winterslow boys were looking forward to putting lowly ‘Parish to the sword, and the way Chris Stone (140) started the innings, a huge total was in the offing. Hitting powerfully down the ground and through midwicket, Stone was the mainstay of the innings as partners came and went, all of the ‘Parish bowlers having their moments and chipping away at a strong batting line up.

Hampered by the loss of Pops Green with a thigh strain after he’d bowled only 5 of his allotted overs, Timmy “marathon man” Drew was pressed into service with his tweakers, and this proved a turning point in the innings as successive batsmen tried to cart him over the distant boundries of the large Winterslow Oval. Aided by some quality catching, notably from Charlie Evans and Malc Noble, a flurry of late wickets restricted the home side, and a total of 235-8 was considerably fewer than had been threatened earlier in the day. Charlie’s second spell was also worthy of note as he claimed late wickets and restricted the scoring well, no batsman other than centurian Stone scoring more than 20.

With recent batting disasters fresh in the mind, Whiteparish set out to avoid a top order collapse, and despite the early loss of Tim D for a Chumley, AJ and Pops defended resolutely against accurate opening bowling.

With the run rate hovering around 1 an over after 15 overs, Winterslow realised they needed a change of tactic to induce a few shots and get the game moving on. The introduction of spin at either end had the desired effect as once AJ had gone LBW for a well made 21, the middle order formed something of a procession as one batsman after another aimed wild hoiks and swings at the dobbers on offer and got out.

A bit of sense was restored to proceedings by Cap’n Turk (11) and Sir Geoffrey of Dear (16) with the total creeping past 50 and then 75 as Geoff and Bambi continued the rearguard action. However, when Geoff was bowled by the returning opener, the game was up and another thumping defeat was confirmed.

Now rooted firmly to the foot of the table, something of a minor miracle is required for the 1sts to drag themselves out of a very deep relegation hole.

Summary

Winterslow 235 for 8 off 42 overs (Charlie 3-42, Tim D 2-28)

Whiteparish 79 all out (AJ 21)
