2nd XI vs Wilton, Regional 3 North West (away) May 24 '08
A 3rd consecutive victory was achieved over on the plastic at Wilton. Captain Jazz won the toss and decided to continue with the winning trend
of batting first and then defending a total.
Mike C and Sven opened and made a good start putting on 49 for the first wicket. The outfield was lightning quick and the pitch was straight up and
down with a bit of bounce as expected from an artificial strip. Sven then mis-timed a pull and was caught at mid-wicket for 17.
Javed was in, edged one for 4 and was then out soon after which brought the in-form Mr Cricket Junior Magoo to the crease with the score on 61.
With Mike batting sensibly at the other end, he and Junior Magoo moved the score onto 123 before Josh played an expansive hoik across the line and was
bowled for 34. This brought Pops to the crease and he played some classy shots and with the help of Miguel, Whiteparish were closing in on maximum
batting points. Dad fell with the score on 187 and Miguel went soon after for a well made 82.
It was then left to the Captain, Sean and Ben to see the score past 200 and up to 209 by the close of the innings. The Captain spent some well needed
time out in the middle and ended the innings not out thus making sure that for this week at least, the wife wouldn’t be able to say his batting had been
really crap again.
After some more dodgy quiche at tea, Whiteparish then set about defending their total by starting with 5 men on the boundary right from the first ball.
Dad and Junior opened the bowling and it wasn’t long before Pops struck with the score on 6. Miguel then dropped the World Cup once more but redeemed
himself the very next ball by catching the Wilton skipper on the long off boundary.
The wickets then fell at a steady rate and after 2 catches and a stumping by Ben, Wilton were teetering on the brink at 67 for 7. With the Bird happy with the
run rate, Wilton’s number 8, Phil Sawkill, then went for broke and proceeding to cart the unfortunate Sean for a few straight sixes. With some great looking
shots, Wilton were soon clawing themselves back into the game until Sven struck and bowled the dangerous Mr Sawkill for 54.
With the dismissal of Wilton’s all conquering number 8, Birdman’s continued re-calculating of the increasing run-rate and Ben’s instigating of the new “Whiteparish
Junior Clap” (not quite on a par with the banned glove touching but pretty close to it), the game drifted away from Wilton as they failed to score the boundaries required.
With some death bowling by Captain Flap and Sven, Wilton were dismissed for 177 in the last over.
After a drink and tucker in the Bell it was back to the Kings Head to take the piss out of Lord Harris.
Summary
Whiteparish 209 for 6 off 42 overs (Mike Coulshed 82, Mike Green 35, ,Josh Green 34)
Wilton 177 all out off 41.1 overs (Sven Hocking 11.1-0-42-4, Josh Green 9-0-24-3, Mike Green 12-1-40-3)
