2nd XI vs Wellow & Plaitford, Regional 3 North West (home) May 31 '08

Whiteparish suffered their heaviest defeat in almost 3 years in a game that was decided by the fact that Wellow’s 1st team ringers were better than Whiteparish’s.

After a few days of rain and mower breakdowns, Lord Harris and his ground staff did well to prepare a pitch - a Faisalabad dust bowl it wasn’t though. It was no surprise that Whiteparish were put into bat after Wellow won the toss.

After 2 overs, Whiteparish were on 20 for 0 mainly thanks to Mr Extras and an equivalent of Terence the Human Sieve (not Martin Collins though) behind the stumps.

However, the Wellow bowlers slowly got into their rhythm and Miguel was soon out as the curse of his dodgy mince pies against the straight ball struck again.

From 39 for 1, Whiteparish collapsed to 68 for 5 with 1st team Big Time Charlie Malcy Noble bowled out for 0 after trying to hoik the Wellow 1st team spin bowler out of the ground.

Ben and the Captain put on a steady 36 together before Mr Jazz was caught in the deep with the score on 104. Ben played very well as wickets fell around him including Sean who must have taken Malcy’s advice as he, too, tried to welly the spinner into the tennis courts but only succeeded in hearing the all too familiar death rattle behind him.

Ben was soon out for a well made 22 and it was left to Greg and the Bird to see the innings out. Unfortunately, the Bird made it to the 41.5th over before performing a double pirouette and getting bowled off the last ball by Wellow’s lob bowler.

Another entertaining tea ensued hosted as ever by the delectable Graham Dear who took great pleasure in telling all the 7 year olds to “Sod off”.

The Whiteparish defence of their total of 131 was a bit of a non-event as the Wellow openers had no trouble at all with any of the 6 bowlers used. There was nothing of any note worth mentioning apart from the Wellow number 1 batsman reaching a trouble-free 93 not out as they cruised to the required 132 runs in a little over 26 overs to secure an easy maximum points victory.

So, a bit of a damp squib in the end and not for the first time, the 1st XI Death or Glory boys were more death than glory. Still Malcy consoled himself with a visit to the Kings Head to listen to a band play some quality 60s music including some fabulous covers of his favourites “The Searchers”. Failing that there was always the opportunity to take the piss out of Lord Harris.

Summary

Whiteparish 131 all out off 42 overs (Mr Extras 31)

Wellow & Plaitford II 132 for 0 off 26.1 overs
