1st XI vs Sutton Scotney, Regional 1 North (away) August 23 '08

Navigation and time keeping have never been the forte of the club, and true to form, Whiteparish began this game with only 9 players, Malcolm and Lord Harris heading north on the M3 somewhere around Basingstoke as it became clear that the directions in the handbook were a couple of junctions wide of the mark!

Their absence could have proven to be a major problem as, batting first, the ‘Parish subsided to 0-2 after three balls. First Timmy Drew chipped one to square leg, and then Bambo Petty was beaten for pace by the very next ball. With the rest of the side scrambling for pads, boxes and bats, it was with some relief that AJ and Charlie steadied the badly listing ship and, in addition to a number of extras generously donated by the Sutton Scotney bowlers, started to move the score along at a very respectable rate.

AJ in particular looked in good touch, playing nicely of his legs, but the good news couldn’t last and both were seen off just as they looked to be settled in for the long haul.

Lord Harris proceeded to keep pace with Mr Extras, the pair of them going head-to-head in the battle to see who would get the highest score of the innings. The Sutton Scotney bowlers obligingly kept putting the ball in Rob’s arc, and he kept hitting it, several boundaries being dispatched straight down the ground. With Sir Geoffrey of Dear providing resolute support, and one glorious pull for four, the total began to assume respectable proportions, and the run rate was kept high.

Unfortunately Geoffrey’s dismissal ushered in the end of the innings in remarkably quick time as the lower order of Lee James, the guesting Faber Dovey and Tim Silley all managed to find ways of getting themselves out to the newly introduced lob bowler, who ended with remarkable figures of 3-2 off 3 overs. Lord Harris was left high and dry on 32 not out, reflecting on what might have been as images of a dominant and match-winning century slowly faded from his imagination.

Sutton Scotney were obviously in no mood to hang around, their openers swinging at pretty much everything and connecting with most. Charlie and Rob were both removed from the attack after haemorrhaging runs in their 2 over spells, and it was only when Tim Drew was introduced to the “attack” that the batsmen looked vulnerable. They continued to try to end the game in quick time, but as Tim took the pace off the ball, so they had to hit it harder and failed to clear the long boundaries. Bambo took a fantastic catch to dismiss the dominant opener for 70odd, clinging on to a skier virtually one handed as he circled under it at mid-wicket like a drunk reeling round a bar on Saturday night.

Lord Harris accepted another chance at long off, and a third wicket fell when Turkleton was rewarded for his persistence with the number 3 chipping tamely to Charlie at cover. But that was as good as it got for the ‘Parish, and the home side strolled to the victory that condemned the 1sts to the drop back to Regional 2 North West for next season.

Summary

Whiteparish 113 all out (Lord Harris 32)

Sutton Scotney 117-3 (Tim Drew 2-18)
