2nd XI vs Sparsholt 3rd XI, Regional 3 North West (home) August 23 '08

Whiteparish fielded a 1984 legends team against Sparsholt that included Sharpy and Jonny the Fox. The average age of the side was up around the 50 mark despite 3 juniors.

Whiteparish lost the toss and batted first. Things started steadily with Miguel and Mr Noisy getting the score up to 37 inside 7 overs. Disaster then struck as first Sven and then Sharpy went without any addition to the score. Sharpy, in the side for his batting, kept up his record of scoring chumleys for the 2nds.

Miguel and the Captain then put on almost 50 before Mike was bowled by a grubber with the score on 85. The Captain and Senior Magoo moved the score onto 122 before Jazzer departed for the 4th wicket. The run rate began to slow up and so followed the loss of 5 wickets for 18 runs. Only some defiant Foxy and Clumsy batting for the 10th wicket got the score to 153 for 9 at tea.

After another Graham Dear rude tea, Whiteparish set about defending their total. Things started well with Noisy and Magoo taking a wicket each to leave the visitors on 22 for 2. That was as good as it got as the Sparsholt number 1 and 4 bats clobbered their way to victory with consummate ease. Even a dodgy Dave East trigger off Benny the Block couldn’t stop the visitors claiming a relatively straight forward and deserved victory at the end of the 29th over.

And so it was really decided by the fact that Sparsholt’s youth were miles better than Whiteparish’s old duffers.

As some wag commented afterwards, we’d have beaten them in 1984 but this would be mainly due to the fact that most of the opposition weren’t born then.

It was then back to the Kings armed with gas masks to take the piss out of Harris who smelt like a vegetarian’s fart.

Summary

Whiteparish 153 for 9 off 42 overs (Rich DaCosta 40, Sven Hocking 26)

Sparsholt III 154 for 3 off 29 overs
