2nd XI vs OTs & Romsey III, Regional 3 North West (away) June 21 '08

Whiteparish won by a huge 76 run margin against OTs & Romsey IIIs over at the Death Valley of cricket that is Hunts Farm.

Playing at Hunts Farm is about as pleasant as getting a face full of Harris’ spittle on a Saturday night in the Kings Head as he recites how great his 2 for 81 bowling figures were against the 10 year olds.

With drizzle in the air, the Captain lost his 5th toss of the season and the Romsey skipper had no hesitation in bowling first.

Mike C and Mr Cricket opened the batting but it wasn’t long before Junior had flunked his exams again as he chased after the slowest wide ever and dollied it up to point. School report says must do better after a promising start to his summer term!

Dad Green then came to the crease and proceeded to crack a few through the covers. At the other end Mike C was pinching a few runs behind square before he plopped one back to the bowler for 17 with the score on 65.

Pops carried on hitting straight boundaries while Junior Magoo continued a discussion with the Captain on the sidelines about how much harder GSCEs were compared to O Levels. (Editors note – this theory was proved to be incorrect after the innings as the Bird struggled to make Josh’s scoring add up and it ended up with Dad Green being deducted 4 runs from his impressive innings. Plus the score sheet had been allowed to get wet by said Junior prompting Mike C to say that the brown stains on it resembled “someone having used it to wipe their arse”)

Meanwhile, back in the middle some cricket was going on but sadly Mike G’s promising innings came to an end on 44 reduced to 40 courtesy of Junior Magoo (see above).

The Captain came to the wicket and after a couple of lives kept the scoreboard ticking over with Slasher Magoo before Kevvie rather tamely lifted one up to point again. Benny the Block (Protege of Sir Geoffrey of Dear), came to the middle to try and keep out the bowling until tea the next day.

A partnership of over 50 then ensued as Jazzer played some rather ugly skiers and hoys to leg but due to the nature of the vast outfield got away with it each time. With the score nearly on 150, Jazzman holed out to long on for a not very graceful 44.

Benny the Block then became the 3 person to chip to point before Chris Crew and the Postie closed the innings on a respectable 156 for 6.

Dad Green opened the bowling and got a wicket 2nd ball as the opener nicked one behind to the safe hands of Benny the Block.

0 for 1 soon became 4 for 2 as the Bird took a great running catch at mid-wicket off Mr Magoo’s bowling. By now the wicket had taken a sinister turn and was bordering on dangerous as the Romsey batters had to deal with some nasty unplayable deliveries from Mike that were lifting off a length and popping up right into their Chevy Chase.

The pitch was having a major influence on the game and it was no surprise that wickets began to tumble to take the game away from Romsey. The Father and Son Green combination struck again with Josh taking a magnificent catch at mid-wicket after the ball had been hit high above the streets and houses, rainbow climbing high……(!)

Jazzer got into the act by taking a leap of faith and plucking a one-handed one off the top shelf to give Dad his 4th wicket.

The two Junior Magoos, aided by some great sliding fielding by Greg, finished off the tail to give Whiteparish a massive 76 run victory and move them into 3rd place in the League – their highest position ever.

It was then back to the KH to watch the Martin Collins and Mr Smear baiting show followed by the Whiteparish Youth and Lord Harris Punch and Judy Extravaganza, “Oi! ‘arris! I got my eye on you!”

Summary

Whiteparish 156 for 6 off 42 overs (Rich DaCosta 44, Mike Green 40)

OTs & Romsey III 80 all out off 37.4 overs (Mike Green 12-2-27-4)
