1st XI vs Ramsdell, Regional 1 North (home) August 2 '08
After the humiliation at Easebourne, the 1sts turned in a far more respectable performance on Saturday against Ramsdell, even though the result was an 11th defeat in 13 games.
After a wet morning, the toss was crucial and Cap’n Turk lost out for the 3rd week in a row. No great surprise when the visitors from Basingstoke opted to make first use of a damp
track with a shiny new ball.
Despite the unpromising circumstances, Timmy D and MC, drafted in when the 2nds were called off earlier in the day, strode out to form the umpteenth opening partnership of the season.
Their combined ballast served to provide a far more solid platform than has been the case over recent weeks, and Tim was looking in decent touch until he hit a half volley straight
at extra cover for 12. Sir Geoffrey of Dear, promoted to number 3 after some stirling work down the order in recent weeks, ensured that no further early wickets would be lost.
Unfortunately, he also made sure that no further runs would be scored, and proceeded to play the anchor role while MC compiled a useful 34. Charlie attempted to up the scoring rate,
taking the aerial route and perishing when he clattered a drive back at the veteran off spinner who clung on to the chance, despite later complaining of severe bruising!
The skipper fell attempting to clear the church wall at long off, and after a cameo from Malcy Noble (23), he too paid the price for his aggression, aiming across the line and being bowled.
With the innings in danger of subsiding, Lord Harris proceeded to turn back the clock with a vintage display, his recent change in form seeming to coincide with his decision to ditch
the Neolithic Super Tusker that has been his weapon of choice since before MC started cultivating his moustache. Striking the ball cleanly, Rob (36no) and Dylan’s Dad (15no) added
crucial runs at the end of the innings and lifted the total to a respectable 139-6, not too shoddy given the conditions but possibly about 20 short of a challenging target.
The Ramsdell reply started slowly, Turkleton regularly beating the outside edge with balls that refused to either catch the egde or clip the off stump. Charlie had better luck, breaching
the defences of one of the openers to claim the first scalp. When the number 3 clipped the skipper straight to Benno Armstrong at square leg, the pressue mounted on the visitor’s middle order.
Lord Harris continued his good day by picking up 2 wickets, the first strangled down the leg side (a good catch by Lee behind the sticks) and the second a caught and bowled which saw the veteran,
in his final season, jigging around the outfield like a demented leprechaun.
His afternoon was the somewhat spoiled by “Rhino” who came in at number 6 and turned the game in Ramsdell’s favour as he bludgeoned his way to a match-winning 45. Although Charlie came back on
from the Football Ground End to have him caught at deep-midwicket, the damage had been done and even Charlie’s 3rd wicket of the day in the gathering gloom and rain couldn’t prevent the inevitable
and Ramsdell eased home by 4 wickets with 4 overs to spare.
Still, a more solid batting display after recent woes and a more disciplined performance with the ball which made the visitors fight all the way.
Summary
Whiteparish 139 for 6 off 42 overs (Lord Harris 36no, Mike C 34)
Ramsdell 143 for 6 (Charlie Evans 3-45, Lord Harris 2-45)
