1st XI vs Owslebury, Regional 1 North (away) June 14 '08

A very welcome win for the 1st XI, dragging them kicking and screaming up the Regional 1 North league table, was exactly what the doctor ordered, even if not quite in the rampant fashion that would have satisfied the hoards of travelling supporters.

Unfortunately, the victory was not without cost, as the aforementioned doctor also ordered that JD may miss the rest of the season after sustaining a fairly horrific compound fracture of the little finger of his left hand when attempting to cling onto a caught and bowled opportunity.

Commiserations to JD, who is both our leading run scorer (170) and wicket taker (13) after the opening 6 games of the season. A big loss to the side given his form this year, and even more keenly felt given the circumstances of this season and the absence of the Hamblin boys. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery, JD.

That news rather overshadowed a decent team performance from the ‘Parish who lost the toss and were inserted, having finally worked out which bit of verdant green grass was masquerading as the wicket. The confusion seemed to linger in AJ’s mind as he took a stroll down the track and was stumped by yards, the ‘keeper standing back and throwing the ball back while AJ admired the scenery.

Tubby Drew (28) and Benny Doggett (30) put this early loss behind them and both took advantage of some overpitched pies to drive cleanly down the ground. Their demise inspired something of a pinch hitting slash fest, with JD, Dougal and Charlie all keen to take the aerial route, possibly not the best plan on a pitch doing a bit and the ball holding up. With Owslebury holding some good catches, not least the one at cover that got rid of JD when he middled a cut which was somehow plucked from the air when seemingly past the fielder, the innings was in danger of stalling after a promising start.

Captain Boycott did his best to see out the overs, displaying a remarkable lack of fluency as he raced to 6 from about 10 overs before dollying one up to cover when he finally tried to hit one off the square. However, a sprightly contribution from Lord F****** Harris, and a steadfast but rather dull partnership with Bambi ensured that the 150 was reached and the overs nearly batted through, Bambi missing a hoik in the final over and being bowled.

Resident game-reading expert Benny Dogget reckoned that was more than enough and his prediction seemed to be coming true as JD took 2 in 2 balls at the start of the Owslebury reply, admittedly with the assistance of their umpire who was not popular with his team-mates after giving a pair of LBW decisions. Looked plumb to us, Umps.

It was at this stage that JD’s digit tried to intercept a fiercely struck drive and paid the consequence. With Jim being taken off to casualty in obvious and understandable pain, Richie H took to the pitch for the first time this season as an emergency sub fielder, posting himself at slip and banishing Timmy D to roam the wide open expanses at square leg.

Captain Glyndwr, sensing that the moment had come to raise his game, produced the next 2 wickets, dislodging the bails of the remaining opener and number 4 to take his first scalps for 3 weeks while also going at less than 2 an over from his allotted 12.

Charlie Evans replaced the skipper and grabbed early victims, the game looking done and dusted with Owslebury still well short of their target and 8 down. However, this hadn’t taken into account “Kiwi” who came in and bludgeoned the bowling to all parts.

With his team sensing an unlikely victory if Kiwi stayed in for a further 5 overs, it was with some relief that he hit Charlie straight to Benny Doggett at long off who made no mistake with the catch. The innings was wrapped up with the very next delivery, Tim Silley swooping at cover to clutch a sharp chance, and the points were in the bag.

Summary

Whiteparish 157 all out (Ben Doggett 30, Timmy Drew 28)

Owslebury 107 all out (Charlie Evans 4-25)
