1st XI vs Midhurst II, Regional 1 North (home) May 24 '08

An extremely windy, if dry, day saw a match dominated by two innings at the batsman-friendly Whiteparish Oval.

Inviting the first time visitors to bat first, Cap'n Turk could have been regretting his decision as a succession of tasty pies and other assorted morsels were served up to the Midhurst batsmen from the church end where every bowler struggled to reach the crease uphill into the unusually strong winds. T.Atkins feasted heartily on the offerings, compiling a fluent 117. The other batsmen didn't find life quite so easy, and the middle order in particular were pegged back by fine spells from Tim "Spin King" Drew (3-41) and a fist bowl for several seasons from Malc Noble (2-28). A total of 239-7 may have seemed imposing to Midhurst, but years of experience playing at Whiteparish meant that the home side knew the target was a gettable one, givn the easy-paced pitch and fast outfield.

Some interesting calling and shot selection put paid to the Drew/Parsons/Petty top order, but the run chase kicked into life as Jim Dovey (37) continued his good early season form and was joined by Malc "Tall Trees" Noble, who proceeded to turn the game on its head with a fantastic display of clean hitting. His 82 included no less that 6 sixes, most of them clearing the straight boundary by some distance and ending up in the church yard. Sensible lad, hitting with the wind! His demise, with 40 needed from 14 overs, signalled another shift in momentum, and when Turk (11) and Lord Harris (11) were out soon after, the game was up. 'Parish finished with 222 all out; close, but no cigar, and the league campaign in Regional 1 North is yet to really get off the ground.
