2nd XI vs Leckford 2nd XI, Regional 3 North West (home) July 26 '08

Wholesale changes in personnel meant a new look,or in some cases an old look,2nd X1 took the field against Leckford. In came newcomer Perminder Tanday (another from the Bishop Wordsworth talent pool), back from retirement came The Fabulous Feltham Boys and back from the dead came Nick Turner and Chris Bartell, both nursing dodgy knees.

With the skipper and his double-headed coin both missing,stand-in captain Coulshed promptly lost the toss and condemned his troops to 42 overs in the field. Sven "Pothunter" Hocking took the first over and all seemed quiet until the ball was thrown to The Great Bartelli to bowl the second over from the Churchyard End. As he ran in to bowl, the dodgy knee gave way and he could only watch the ball sailing into the Rottweiler's field as he sank to the floor. Clearly the fall from the high wire had done more damage than he thought. Sven bowled his overs tidily and finished with excellent figures of 3-39 from 12 overs. Nick Turner battled through the pain barrier to record 1-50 from his 12, while Sean, Perminder and The Great Bartelli were dealt with rather more severely. Add in a few dropped catches and a couple of misfields and a baking hot day, Leckford no.3 rather unsportingly hitting 130 and you get the picture. Good catches, however, were held by Greg Baker, Chris Crew and Elvis. The target was 266!

A pleasant tea interval spent listening to the Tea Lady hurling abuse at opposition and visitors as well as the home side left us ill prepared for the serious business of batting. Captain Coulshed (37) and Elvis (26) were the only batsmen to make it to double figures as the innings subsided to 99 all out. In many ways this was more disappointing than the bowling and fielding performance, particularly as the innings lasted only 20 overs. In the words of Michael Vaughan, we batted like millionaires. A look at the scorebook after the game provided an unexpected consolation prize as we had acquired a new no.3 batsman - a hybrid by the name of Javed Green.

Back to the Kings Head then to await the return of Lord Harris and plenty of comedy material there was as the stories of a record defeat emerged. None funnier than Dylan Hamblin's account of how he scored 3 times as many runs as the grizzled veteran.

Summary

Leckford 265 (Sven Hocking 3-39)

Whiteparish 99 all out (Mike Coulshed 37, Adi Feltham 26)
