1st XI vs Hurstbourne Priors, Regional 1 North (away) May 10 '08
The firsts successfully came second at Hurstbourne Priors on the opening day of the league season,
performing commendably in the field but abysmally with the bat.
Winning the toss and bowling first, Whiteparish's 5-pronged seam and swing attack were soon in business as
a succession of chances were generously offered by the home batsmen. With most of these being accepted,
including notable efforts in the slips by Tim Drew and at long off by Geoff Dear, and first catches at this
level for 'keeper Lee James and debutant Ben Doggett, Hurstbourne struggled to 124 all out. Pick of the bowlers
was Lord Harris who returned the surprisingly economical figures of 12-2-25-4. With extras (32) top scoring, it
was hoped that Hurstbourne hadn't been let off the hook on a pitch not best suited to stroke play.
Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed as a steady fall of wickets scuppered any chances of a successful chase.
Darryl Parsons (17) and Jim Dovey (16) did their best to break the shackles imposed by the home bowlers, but tight lines
and lengths offered little to hit, and the lush outfield prevented the flurry of boundaries that might have made for a closer
contest. Despite late order resistance from Glyn Turk (13 not out), the tail was swept aside and 'Parish were all out for 73,
just shy of a bonus point and well away from the 125 victory target.
So plenty to work on in the coming weeks, especially where the batting is concerned!
