1st XI vs Donnington, Regional 1 North (home) July 12 '08
Entering this bottom-of-the-table clash for what Match of the Day might have described as a “48 pointer”, ‘Parish knew
that anything less than a win would make the task of staying in Regional 1 virtually impossible.
Well, after a second consecutive thumping defeat, it’s not completely impossible, but pretty close to it! Other results
have done us a favour, and there’s a cluster of teams who have all won 2 or 3 games, so although currently in 18th place,
a couple of wins could still provide a remarkable and unlikely survival story.
Anyway, back to Saturday. A crucial toss, with a damp wicket awaiting whoever ended up batting first, was won by the
visitors and they very uncharitably elected to bowl. Honestly, where’s the sportsmanship gone?
Quite frankly, the less said about the ‘Parish innings, the better. Mike “Pops” Green played a lone hand with a fine
example of how to bat in the swinging and seaming conditions against decent bowling. His 34 was by some way the highest
score of the innings, and put his team-mates to shame as they crumpled in a heap around him. Despite a frisky cameo from
Lord Harris (10) and some resolute defence from Sir Geoffrey and Bambo, and total of 84 all out was a pretty poor effort,
especially when we saw what the Donnington attack had to offer after the openers had both completed their allotted 12 overs.
Still, the pitch hadn’t changed much in nature when Donnington started their reply, and there was still planty of seam
movement on offer. Charlie (1-20) made the initial breakthrough, and then Cap’n Turkleton followed this up with another
2 wickets and some cracking deliveries down the slope which had the visiting batsmen groping at thin air. Unfortunately,
at 30odd for 3 and just a hint that the game could be tighter than anyone thought, no further chances were forthcoming
and the visitors romped home.
Another early evening in the Kings then! There’s always next week…
Summary
Whiteparish 84 all out (Mike Green 34)
Donnington 87-3 (Glyn 12-5-27-2)
