1st XI vs Chawton, Regional 1 North (home) August 30 '08

With a joint celebration for Sir Geoffrey’s 50th birthday and the official retirement from league cricket of Lord Harris to look forward to post-match, it was perhaps little surprise that the punch-drunk 1st team capitulated yet again on Saturday, offering only token resistance and providing Chawton with the win that will probably preserve their position in Regional 1 North.

Losing the toss didn’t help, as although there were blue skies overhead and the sun was shining for a change, the pitch was still damp and offered assistance to the bowlers.

Tim Drew and birthday boy Sir Geoffrey began proceedings, and there was little sign of the trouble to come as they compiled a relatively comfortable opening partnership. In fact, the biggest drama in the early overs was when a gust of wind blew the scoreboard over on top of the son of the Chawton scorer, resulting in a brief stoppage in play as he let his feelings about the situation known in no uncertain terms, disturbing the concentration of all and sundry. Fortunately, no serious damage seemed to have been done to either child or equipment, and the game continued.

Tim’s demise for 14 triggered something of a collapse, despite Sir Geoffrey’s resolute blocking. Lord Harris ended his career in ignominious fashion, dismissed for 0, and even the fabled Sherfield middle order strokeplayers Malc Noble and Graeme Sharp couldn’t reverse the trend, perishing trying to hit their way out of trouble.

With the innings in tatters, it was left to Benno Armstrong to show the top order how it should be done as he carved his way to 15, with able assistance from Bambo Petty who hit a couple of crisp strokes before being cleaned up by the returning opening bowler, and even the Great Bartelli couldn’t bring his magic to bear on proceedings on his 1st XI debut.

70 all out didn’t really look like it was going to present too much of a problem for the visitors, and so it proved as the openers set about the run chase in determined fashion, knowing that a maximum point win would do wonders for their survival chances.

Despite Lord Harris bowling the more aggressive of the pair, and Tim Drew claiming the other, caught at slip by Turkleton after a neat overhead pass by ‘keeper Lee James, the target was achieved in quick time and the curtain could be drawn over a disappointing and frustrating season.

Summary
