1st XI vs Ashford Hill, Regional 1 North (home) June 21 '08
After the brief glimpse of glory afforded by the win against Owslebury, it was back to the monotony of a 6th defeat
in 7 games for the 1st team on Saturday as Ashford Hill ran out comfortable winners at the Whiteparish Oval.
After overnight rain and more drizzle on the morning of the match, the track was greasy and green, but surprisingly firm
underneath, which resulted in some good bounce and carry for the bowlers prepared to bend their backs. Captain Turk was
therefore happy to win the toss and bowl first with his patched up side, and both the skipper and Charlie Evans responded
with impressive opening spells. The captain’s parsimonious recent form continued, conceding just 21 runs from his 12 overs
and being unlucky not to claim more than the solitary wicket as he beat the bat regularly.
With Ashford’s scoring rate being kept in check at around 3 an over after 20 overs, the game was in the balance, but the
lack of early wickets came back to haunt the home side as the visiting batsmen embarked on a run fest in the second half
of their innings. In all 3 batsmen recorded 50s, gorging themselves on the offerings served up by Lord Harris in particular,
who had obviously been to visit Mrs Miggins that morning for a fresh supply of succulent morsels.
Good catches in the deep by Charlie and Sir Geoffrey of Dear at least produced a couple of wickets, but Charlie suffered in
his second spell as the Ashford number 6 opened his shoulders and hit a succession of sweetly timed shots to boost his side’s
final score.
Whiteparish’s pursuit got off to a bad start as Billy Bowyer was feng shuied early doors, but that brought together Timmy Drew
and AJ who built a decent partnership with both batsmen hitting some good looking shots. Unfortunately they couldn’t build on
their hard work, with both being dismissed in the 20s when well set.
The scene was set for a Malcolm special, and Nob didn’t disappoint, cruising to 58 with little trouble and the usual array of
clean hitting, especially down the ground. He and the skipper were just putting together a useful stand when Malc tickled one
down the leg side and very generously walked, even though the ‘keeper didn’t appeal.
The lower order struggled to come to terms with the latest Kiwi oponent to be faced, the Antipodean medium pacer claiming a
Michelle, leaving the skipper stranded on 31 not out and the total well shy at 162 all out.
On the bright side, there weren’t any fresh injury scares, and the 2nds won again!
Summary
Ashford Hill 226-4
Whiteparish 162 all out (Malc Noble 58, Glyn Turk 31*)
