2nd XI vs Ampfield II, Regional 3 North West (home) June 28 '08
Whiteparish won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that was described by Ampfield’s skipper 2 years ago as “the only good thing is
that at least it’s got a set of stumps at each end!”
The Ampfield opening bowlers made a tidy start and it wasn’t long before the breakthrough came when Sven dollied one up for a simple caught
and bowled with the score on 15. It was soon 21 for 2 as Josh’s recent batting gremlins surfaced once more and he edged one to slip.
Ampfield were on the front foot now and with Senior Magoo struggling with the short ball it was left to Mike to keep the score board ticking
over. Aided by some rather high pitched Maria Sharapova style squealing from one of the fielders, the pressure soon told as Senior Magoo
edged one to slip with the score on 41.
This brought the Captain to the crease and after a tentative start in which he scratched around for 10 overs scoring just 10 runs, the score
moved onto 80 at the halfway stage of the innings.
For the next 10 or so overs the run rate steadily increased as Mike and Jazzer started to open up. Mike was dropped on 40 odd after he gloved
a snorter of a delivery behind and along with his best efforts to distract the bowlers by releasing some extremely rancid gas, he sped past 50.
With some lusty blows coming from both ends and not just Mike’s sphincter, the 100 partnership was reached in the 33rd over. It wasn’t long after,
that Mike reached the milestone of his maiden century for Whiteparish. Super effort that! Jazzer reached his 50 and with the score on 197 in the
37th over Mike was bowled for a brilliant 113. Marvellous! His innings consisted of 21 fours and 1 six. Well batted Wally H.
His partnership of 156 with Jazzer was also the first 150 plus stand in the 2nds since, incredible as it seems, Sir Geoffrey and Kevvie Magoo’s
opening stand of 153 in August 2003.
Home games only Malcy added a cameo 17 not out at the end of the innings as Whiteparish closed on 232 for 4 off their 42 overs.
The Ampfield reply started tentatively as they fell behind the required run-rate right from the outset. The 1st wicket fell in the 5th over when
the ball was chipped to Birdman at mid-wicket and it lodged in his chunky Fatima Whitbread thighs.
With Sven bowling a tight line down the hill, the score pootled along to 30 before Malcy took a catch to dismiss the number 3 bat in the 15th over.
The expected onslaught never materialised and at the halfway stage Ampfield were way off the pace still some 170 or so runs behind.
After the drinks break, Sean instigated a mini-collapse and a rumble in the pavilion as 5 wickets fell for 50 odd runs. “Ere, lads! They’ve laid
a scrap on for us in the pavilion!” exclaimed Clumsy as memories of the “where’s your parrot?” fight on the table next to us at the Rose Bowl
presentation evening came flooding back.
With the field spread, singles were in abundance as the boundaries dried up with only the odd 4 and occasional 6 being hit. Sean took the final
wicket in the 39th over for his maiden 5th wicket haul as Whiteparish romped home by a massive 87 runs to consolidate their position near the top of the table.
It was then back to the KH to take the piss out of Lord Harris and to ensure that he does indeed do us all a favour and retire at the end of the season.
An added comedy bonus was the Mr G Sharp and P Newton “Me and My Mates At Tytherley” show.
Summary
Whiteparish 232 for 4 off 42 overs (Mike Coulshed 113, Rich DaCosta 67*)
Ampfield II 145 all out off 38.3 overs (Sean Coulshed 9.3-0-49-5)
